2. If you’re gone

Chapter 9

It will all work out in the end………..

Sally continued through the hallway cautiously. She had the gun placed out in front of her, for protection. She slowed down as she approached an intersection of another hallway. She could hear voices but had no where to go. She flattened herself against the wall, in hopes that the partial shadows would hide her. Her eyes widen as she watched the two people pass. She slipped out of the shadows and followed behind them. She got up behind the last person and shoved her gun in his back.

“Well, if it isn’t our runaway boy.” Sally snarled .

Hilde turned around and raised her hands. “No, wait, Sally, it’s ok. He’s on our side.”

“Since when?” She asked as she still prodded him with the gun.

James held his hands up and said nothing.

“Sally, trust me.”

“I do, but not him.”

“I know but he’s gonna get us out of here.”

Sally shook her head. “Not till we destroy the place.”
“Taken care of,” James murmured.

“What?”

“I have planted bombs all over the place. And I plan to kill Gregory before I escape.” He looked at both of them, “Yes, I do plan to escape.”

“You can’t, You’ll die.” Sally exclaimed, looking at him.
He shook his head. “That’s why I need you.” He shoved a vial in her hand. “Analyze this and see if you can make an antidote for the poison they filled me with. There has to be a way.”

Sally blinked and looked at the blue vial in her hand. “James?”
“ I have enough to survive , ok? I’ll get in touch with you about. But now , come on.”

He lead the girls through the hallway up to the main floor. He stopped them as he looked out into the large hall that all the hallways converged into.

“You guys go that way, it will take you out side.”

“What about you?”
He waved his hand, “I’ll be fine.” He laughed, “I have been blown up, poisoned , shot and still I survive. I will not be taken down by this loser. He may have made me but he doesn’t own me.”

“No.” Sally replied. “We have to make sure he’s dead and all these records are destroyed. This stuff an not fall into someone else’s hands.”
“I have sent some of it to Heero in a coded file. He know about later.” he shook his head. “You won’t let me do this alone, will you?”
Sally shook her head.

“Then, Let’s at least get Hilde out of here.” He looked over at the dark, haired girl. “She shouldn’t be in here when it goes up. She shouldn’t be any where near here but it can’t be helped.”

“No, I want to stay,” Hilde hissed.

Sally looked at her and nodded. “I agree with James. There are too many chemicals here for you to breath in. Besides the guys should be on their way , right?” She asked as she looked over to James.

“Yes.”
“Why did you tell them? He wants to kill them! Does he know they are coming? Have you tricked us again?”

James shook his head. “No, he doesn’t know . And I plan to have him dead before they even get here.” He grabbed Hilde’s arm and pulled her toward the exit. Sally followed behind.
As they got closer, Hilde dug her heels into the ground and tried not to be propelled along. “no! No! I want to stay and help! Don’t make me ………”
Sally came up and grabbed her arm, helping James get her to the door. “Come on, Hilde. You have to go out side. It’s not safe for your baby. Think of your baby.”
Hilde’s eyes squinted as she glared at her friend. “That’s dirty pool! You know I would never forgive my self if anything happened to the baby. Damn you.”
Sally grinned and shoved her out the door. “ Find a place to hide ,Hilde, till I come and get you.”

Then the door was slammed in her face. Hilde growled and pounded softly on the door. “Let me in, you guys. “
She received no answer and stepped back from the door. “Damn it.” she groused , as she looked around the dimly lit parking lot. Where was she going to hide ? She shivered a little in the cool night air.

Sally looked forlornly at the door she had just slammed in her friend’s face. “I feel bad about that.”

“You won’t be, and she’ll thank you later when she ahs a healthy baby.”
Sally nodded as she followed James down the semi dark hall way.

She looked up trying to find the security cameras. “You know, I haven’t figured out why there are barely any lights in these halls.”

James chuckled. “Because Gregory is a tight ass. He is more worried about how much he spends on experiments than his comforts. Besides it’s too dark for cameras to work. So it is to our advantage.”

She nodded as they continued. “So where are we going?”

“To the main lab. If no one is there I’ll let you look around a bit . But we don’t have a lot of time. All the timers are set for 30 minutes. All I have to do is push the button in my pocket to make them start.”

“OK.” Was her reply. They traveled to the main lab in silence. Neither know what to say to reinsure each other.

WuFei stood and leaned over the table to glare at Une who was across from him.

“Well?” He asked with a hint of impatience in his voice. “We have women to rescue.”

Duo looked up at WuFei. “man, don’t let Hilde here you say that. Sheesh, she’d kick your ass.”
WuFei snorted.

Une typed a bit more and looked up. She looked across to the 3 faces in front of her. “GO.” Was all she said.

Heero and Wu Fei were out the door and down the hall way , as Duo tried t o maneuver his way out of the room with out banging his crutches on any thing.

“Aw, man, they are going to leave with out me.”

Une smiled and shook her head .”No they won’t. Are you sure about this, Duo? You can wait here , you know.”
“No, it’s my girl and our baby out there. I have to go, you understand don’t you, Une?”
She nodded. “I’ll make them wait.” she hit a button on her phone and spoke into it.

Heero was standing impatiently by the hummer they were going to use to go to the place. WuFei was already in the drivers seat revving the engine. Heero opened the back door and waited till Duo had his crutches inside before slamming it shut and getting in himself. There was a cloud of dust behind them as they drove from the hanger onto the road. A few minutes later a few other vehicles followed behind them. They tore down the road, at a break neck speed, trying to get there as fast as possible.

Hilde walked about 600 yards away from the large building and found a slab of cement that had metal hooks imbedded into it. There was a small metal shed with no door and a tall electrical box next to it. She looked in side the shed and stepped inside. It would be a good hiding place.

Sally held her gun close to her chest as she followed James. She couldn’t believe she was trusting him. He could betray her in a heart beat . And what of Hilde? He could have captured and all ready back in here. She sighed. She had to trust, cuz if she didn’t………..James stopped and turned toward her.
“There are files to the right. Get all the disks you can carry in here.” he handed her a small duffel bag. She went to the files as he went to the computer and began to type.

“Be quick, Miss Sally , we don’t have very much time.”

She nodded, knowing he couldn’t hear her head, but quickly grabbed what she could.
“Ok, Let’s go!”

They left the main lab and hurried back down the corridor. He kept looking behind him making sure she was still with him. He never slowed his pace, forcing her to run sometimes to keep up. It wasn’t long before the reached the main floor and the place where Gregory had his office.

“He has an office in an old warehouse?” Sally asked as she looked over to James.

“Yeah, He takes all his clients in there.” James frowned. “Come to think of it, I don’t think he ever leaves this place.”
Sally looked over at him, “Really? Do you suppose he’s one of those people with crowd anxiety?”
James shrugged. “It could be. He doesn’t seem to like lots of people much. But it doesn‘t matter.”

He pushed his door open and stepped into the office. It was quiet and empty.

“He doesn’t seem to be here.” Sally spoke quietly.

“Don’t be deceived. He’s here.”
“Right you are, James.” A voice said as Gregory stepped out from behind a wall panel. “I see you have brought our Miss Po with you.” He said , smiling at Sally, who was holding her gun up at him.

He chuckled, as he looked at the gun. “Please, Miss Po put that away. You really can’t escape.”
He turned to look at James. “What is you want, boy?”
James smiles as he pulled a long dagger and the detonator out of his pockets.

“Your life.” He stated. He stood in front of Gregory, grinning at the older man’s shock. “I suggest you run now Miss Sally.” He pushed the plunger of the detonator he held in his hand. Then he stepped closer to the man in front of him. “Don’t say a word. Your body guards can’t come. I have taken care of them all.” He laughed but it had a hint of madness in it.

Sally’s eyes widened as she watched his step toward Gregory and ram the blade home in his chest. Gregory’s hands came up and grasped the boy’s. They struggled together, each trying to get a better grip on the blade.

“Sally,” James said , with determination. “GET OUT!”

Sally stepped back and watched as James drove the knife into the man’s chest once more. Gregory staggered back , then regained his feet then lunged toward James once more, brandishing a small blade. He swiped at him, causing James to jump back and bump into Sally.

“MISS PO! GET OUT OF HERE!!! NOW!” He yelled at her.

“But…”
“NOW! TIME IS RUNNING OUT! YOU HAVE TO BE AWAY FROM THE BUILDING!” He screamed at her as he struggled with Gregory. “I get hold of you if I survive this.”
Gregory laughed. “You won’t survive boy!”
“We’ll see.”
Sally took another step toward the door, then she ran. Her heart was thumping in her chest as she ran to the nearest exit. She pushed the door open hoping it was an exit. She was hit wit ha blast of cold air as she ran through the door. She jumped as the door slammed shut behind her. She stood still for a few seconds, getting her bearings then ran away from the building. As she got to the road, the building behind her began to rock with explosions. She turned to see one fireball after another rock the building . She staggered and fell as the after shocks hit her. She stayed down on the ground for a few minutes then got to her feet. She had to find Hilde.

Hilde looked out of the metal shed she was hiding in. She saw the building blow and ducked back behind the wall, as one after another after shock blew by her. It rattled the shed but caused no damage. After a moment it was quiet. Except for the rumblings of a building collapsing on itself and the cracking hiss of fire. Hilde stepped out of the building and saw Sally standing in the middle of the road. She shouted and ran to her friends side.

Sally looked over at the sound wondering if she had heard her name or not. She waved when she saw Hilde running toward her. She leaned over and picked up the discarded backpack and hoisted it to her shoulder. She smiled as the girl caught up and huffed next to her.

“You’re ok! Tell me what happened! What’s in the bag? Where’s James?”

Sally placed a hand on her shoulder. “Whoa, girl, one question at a time!” She looked at the now burning building. “Come on, let’s get out of here.”
“But.. James?”
Sally shook her head, “As far as I know he’s still in the building …. And no one could have survived that .”

Hilde looked back at the building as they walked down the dirt road. She sighed. “Too bad….” She said softly.

Sally grabbed her arm as she saw head lights heading for them. If it were people from the building , then they were caught. There was no where to go. It was open field all around them. Sally pulled Hilde to the side of the road and waited for the vehicles to pass them or stop.

It blew by them, then stopped , careening to the side of the road. The door flew open and two men jumped out. The back door opened and someone struggled to get out of back. It was hard to see who was getting out of the vehicle in the darkness, and Sally held on to Hilde’s arm, ready to bolt if the y were threatened.
Hilde shrieked as soon as she saw who was struggling to get of the back seat and broke Sally’s grip. She ran to the Hummer and tackled the unsuspecting person. They disappeared inside the machine.

Sally sighed as she started to recognize the men in the Hummer. Heero stood looking at her, then he looked back at the building.

“Yes, we have some explaining to do.”
Suddenly she was in someone’s arms and he was kissing her.
“Sally,” Came the soft words. “I’m sorry for everything.” Was whispered in her ear. “Please come home to me.”
Sally blinked , in shock. “WuFei?”
“Please, Forgive me.”

She looked at the man in front of her. “WuFei!” She cried as she wrapped her arms around him. “Of course.” She whispered back to him. They shared another kiss and then released each other when Heero cleared his throat.

WuFei stepped back and grasped Sally’s hand.

“We need a report, Sally.” Heero said, stoically. Then he asked, “ What’s in the bag?”

She pulled off of her shoulder, “I hope it’s all his research, because I want to know what was in his mind.”
Heero nodded.

WuFei turned to look at her. “Where’s the boy?”
Sally turned toward the building. “I think he’s dead. He was in there when it blew.”
“Who blew it up?”
“He did. And he helped us get out. He helped me get all this data.” She held up the bag.

Wu Fei’s eyes got wide. “He caused most of the trouble and yet in the end he was helpful.”
“Yeah, I guess.”
Several vehicles and trucks were driving past them, sending a choking cloud of dust in the air.

“Well, there is nothing more to do here. We will return when the fire department had finished. There will be an investigation. Let’s return to head quarters.”

3 months later.

Sally stretched and walked across the bedroom floor. She glanced back at the sleeping man, hoping she wouldn’t wake him. WuFei just rolled over and grasped for the pillow she had left behind.

She slipped quietly through the silence house. Ever since the incident , he had changed. He was still gruff but he had new respect for women. Especially her and Hilde. She smiled as she went to the coffee pot and poured herself a cup of the hot water in it. She dipped a tea bag in it and returned to the bed room. She sat down at the computer and clicked it on. She sipped her tea as she waited for every thing to load. She reflected as she waited. They had investigated the building, found several bodies and very little else. They had found Gregory’s body and several technicians that were caught in the blast. It only took a couple of weeks for them to investigate and close the case. It was clear that this died with Gregory and his henchmen.

She went to her email and entered her name and password. An odd email catch her attention. She frowned as she hit the mail. As she read the message, mouth dropped open and she almost dropped her cup.

“Oh, my God!” She exclaimed.

WuFei sat up in the bed. “What is it , Sally?”
“Wu, come see this email and you tell me.”

He staggered from the bed and padded across the floor to look over her shoulder.
“Well. I’ll be damned.” He replied, shocked. “How did he survive that??”

Sally shrugged. “ I haven’t a clue.” She pointed to the screen, “but it’s obvious he did.”
“Hm.”

Sally looked up at him. “Well, what do you think?”
“About what?”

“This.”
Wu Fei stood up. “Arrange a meeting, give him the drug and let it go. The case is closed and he is no threat to us any more. You will have to continue to make his the drug, right?”
Sally nodded absently. “Yes. I should have a steady supple for him soon. It really is a simple formula . Should I tell Hilde? I think she would be happy to know he’s alright.”
WuFei nodded. “Yes.”

“OK.”

Later that day when Sally meet with Hilde for her 5 month check up, she told Hilde about the email she got from James . Hilde was happy he was well and things were going good for him. Then she asked if he would be coming around.

Sally smiled and Said…. “He said he would come to visit when you had your baby and when WuFei and I got married.”
Hilde looked down at the floor. “It could be a while huh, If we count on you two getting married.”
Sally put her hands on her hips and said, indignantly. “Mrs. Maxwell! I’ll have you know We are getting married in two weeks.” She giggled at Hilde’s shocked look. “And We want you and Duo to stand up with us. It’s just going to be at the court house. Do you think Duo will want to?”
Hilde smiled . “He won’t have a choice in the matter.”

Hilde hugged her friend and skipped out of the examination room to tell her husband the news.

James looked out the window of the office he occupied with several other workers. He smiled as he returned to his desk. Several pictures lay in front of him. One was of Sally and Wu Fei dressed in their finest, with Duo and Hilde standing in the back ground. Sally didn’t have a wedding dress on but he knew why they were posing for the camera. The next few pictures were of Duo and Hilde. One was right after the birth of their twins. She looked exhausted and she was flipping Duo off. The next one was Duo holding both babies, smiling like an idiot. He flipped that one over and read the names again.

Piper and James Maxwell. A girl and boy. Leave it to Duo to do everything in twos. He chuckled and looked at the last one. It was both Duo and Hilde and the babies with Sally and WuFei standing behind. He smiled as he slipped the pictures away and pulled out his syringe and the blue fluid he needed to live. He stuck the needle in his arm as he made plans to go see them. He would be seeing them very soon. He smiled as he put away his equipment and went back to work.
