If You’re Gone

Chapter 6

Heero made his way back through the rubble and up the stairs he had come down. He was relieved the two men were alive. He hated to think he may have lost two of his good friends. He smirked as he thought that, he would never tell either one that. He could hardly tell Relena he loved her.

As he entered the upper floor, several heads turned toward him.

“They’re alive.” He said, quietly, without emotion.

He watched two faces in particular relax with a cautious relief.
Hilde visibly, sighed, he r shoulders dropping slightly. Sally grinned, And yelled, “ALL RIGHT, PEOPLE! LET”S GET THIS SHOW ON THE ROAD!”

Several bodies began to move toward the door, when Heero stopped them.

“It’s unstable, down there. Try going from the outside too.”
One man turned to Sally, “Is there going to big equipment coming for us to use?”
“Yes, it’s on it’s way.”
He nodded and waved fro several men to follow him outside. The remaining men followed Sally and Heero down to the basement, carrying several hand tools.

Hilde felt a hand on her shirt as James stood next to her.

“Hilde, do you have 75 cents? I need a soda.”
“Sure, “ She reached in her bag and pulled out a dollar.” Here ya go. Hurry back, I’ll be right here.”

James smiled and took the bill from her. He slipped down the hall way to the pay phone. He had to call, this would be the perfect opportunity. Two pilots were incapacitated, Yuy was always with Peacecraft and the others well it just didn’t matter. The three most dangerous were taken care of. Now would be the time to put the plan into action. Sally would be the target. She was a top ranking member of the Preventers and she had free rein. He pushed the dollar into the pop machine and waited for his changed. He grinned. He at least didn’t lie to Hilde, he was thirsty. He waited for the can to drop, then went over to the phone. He pushed in the quarter, and then dialed the local number.

Several minutes passed and Hilde became worried, James had been gone too long. She turned on her heel and went to search for him. As she rounded a corner in the hallway she saw him talking on the phone. She frowned as she came closer and heard part of the conversation.

“No, we can’t get to Peacecraft, that pilot, Yuy guards her. And when he’s not , he locks her away somewhere. No, No, Une is too well protected, too. But Sally Po would be easy.” There was a pause. “Yeah, She would be, too. But is she necessary, to take, I mean………of course, yeah, no problem.”
He hung up the phone and turned to face a very angry Hilde.

“What are you doing?”
He looked up at her and said, “Nothing, but you are coming with me.” He reached out to grab her arm but she backed away. “Oh no, Miss Hilde, You will come with me!” He leaped towards her grabbing her around the waist and pulling her to the floor. She grunted as she hit the floor ,but still struggled to get from his grip.

“Let me go, you little bastard!” She hissed.
“Sorry, Hilde, but I just can’t do that.” He said to her as he rendered her unconscious. He stood up and picked up the unconscious woman and tossed her over his shoulder. He felt a tiny bit of regret as he walked through the headquarters, but quickly brushed it off.

Sally turned and looked over her shoulder. She didn’t see Hilde following her and she frowned. Then shrugged maybe she was waiting for James

Heero looked at her and said, ”What?”

“Oh, it’s just Hilde, I thought she would be with us.”
“That kid wanted a soda so maybe she waiting for him.”
She nodded , then turned back to the rubble in front of them.

Several hours later, the rubble had been removed and there was a small hole. Sally stuck her head in.
“WuFei?” She called out.

“Yes, Sally.” Came the soft reply.

“Can you walk? Where is Duo?”
“I can and he’s over there. Under the cement.’

“Is he ok? I don’t hear him.”
“I think he is unconscious. I believe his ankle is crushed.”

“Ok, come out, will you?”
“No, I will stay until Maxwell is free as well.”
Sally smiled. Even with all his posturing, he was very loyal.
“Ok, WuFei. I’ll get a few guys in there to get Duo free.”
“Very good.”

She heard him moving around , then it was quiet.

She called several men over and sent them into the hole. Heero climbed into the hole after the rest. A few minutes later, a very battered and unconscious Duo Maxwell was carried out. WuFei followed behind him, then Heero came out last.

Sally made the men carrying duo, put him on the floor. He groaned and coughed.
“Ouch.” He muttered.

Sally knelt down beside him, “Hi, Duo. I’m going to check you over, ok?”
She slid her hands over him gently touching him.

“Geez, Sally, are you trying to cop a feel? Hilde will be so pissed.”

She laughed, “Same old Duo.” She looked down at the ankle in question. “ Take him up to surgery and someone find Hilde!”
She watched as they carried the injured man upstairs. She then turned her attention to WuFei.

“Wu, are you ok?”
“He saved my life. Maxwell saved my life.”

“What do you mean, Wu?”
“He pushed me out of the way and took the force of the blow. Damn it.”

“What’s wrong with that?”
“Nothing. I have been wrong about him. He is honorable.”
Sally rolled her eyes, “I could have told you that, Wu. He always has been.’

He looked up at her and almost spoke, but clamped his mouth shut. His pride still would not allow him to speak the words he needed to say.

“So, let me see if you have any life threatening injuries, ok. Hold still, ok?”
He sat very sit as she check him over making sure he was ok.
She sighed, with relief. “You both are very lucky.”

He nodded. ”Yes. I know.”

She checked him over, and then pulled him to his feet. “You seem ok. Listen if you feel any pain or anything like that you come to me right away. Come on, let me stitch up your head.” They made their way up the stairs to the main floor.

After she stitched up the cut on Wu Fei’s head, she went to surgery to see how Duo was coming along. A guard came up to her and said, “Miss Schbeicker can not be found any where on the grounds. Neither can the young man who was with her. “ Sally frowned.

***That’s odd,*** she thought. She knew Hilde would want to be where Duo was. “Well look again.”
The man nodded and disappeared. She slipped on a gown and went into the outer room of the operating room.

“How’s he doing?” She asked the nurse as she looked in.

“Doctor Po. Well, they had to put 12 pins in and a metal plate to fix the shattered bone. He will need therapy after it heals. His ankle well probably never be strong again. And he may have to wear a brace for a long time.”
She nodded and looked in the room again. “How much longer?”

“About an half an hour.”

“Keep me informed. I’ll be in my office.”

Sally left the room and walked to her office. As she entered the office she felt something hard against her back and a hand over her mouth. She gasped as she smelled chloroform on the hand. She knew to struggle would be pointless so she relaxed. She let the colorless, foul smelling liquid put her under.

Duo opened his eyes and grunted groggily. “Man, I feel like a building fell on me.” He reached up and ran a hand through his bangs. “Oh, yeah, one did fall on me.” he blinked in the semi darkness.
There was a snicker, and then a small sigh.
“Hey, who’s there? Hilde, is that you?”

“no, It’s me. Hilde has been kidnapped.”
“WHAT? When did this happen?” Duo moved to sit up, and started to pull out his I-V.
WuFei reached over and grasped his arm. “Stop! Don’t pull them out like that.”

“Huh? Why not?”

“It will cause excessive bleeding.”

“I gotta find Hilde! “ He cried as he struggled to pull himself out of the bed.

WuFei hand his arms down. “No! You are injured. You can’t leave.”
“Where’s Sally? I’ll get her to sign my release papers.”
“She’s not here.”

“Where is she?” Duo demanded.

WuFei sat down and sighed. “She too has been kidnapped.”
“WHAT!?” Duo sat up and moved to the end of the bed, swinging his legs over it, see the cast on his ankle for the first time. “What the hell is that!?”
“A cast.”
“Well, duh. I know that, but why is it there?” He asked, pointed to his foot.
“You broke it.”
He flopped back on the bed, “Oh yeah, now I remember. The building fell on us. I suppose this will be a problem.” Then he sat up, “Well, when are we going to save the girls? Do you know who took them?”
WuFei watched Duo’s antics, with his arms crossed and a slight smile on his face.

“Yuy’s checking into it. It seems our little assassin has disappeared also.”

“Soooo , you think the kid has something to do with this? “
Wu Fei nodded and stood. He handed Duo a pair of crutches, then turned from him.

Duo looked at WuFei, then the crutches, watching him walk toward the door.

“Well, are you coming or not?”

Duo blinked then hopped off the bed using the crutches to move to the door. ”Hell, yeah, I’m coming! No one pisses with the God of Death’s woman and gets away with it!”

Hilde blinked, trying to adjust her eyes to the darkness. She jumped a little when she felt someone move next to her. She groaned and tried to move. She found her hands were bound behind her and her mouth was covered with tape. Her legs were tied at the ankles and at an angle behind her. She wiggled her hands and felt the plastic tie scrape off skin. She lifted her head but a throbbing pain caused her lay back down. As her eyes adjusted she took in her surroundings. She was in a vehicle of some kind. The floor had a thick carpet on it. It hurt to move around too much so she stared at the ceiling of her and the other person’s prison. S he sighed silently as she recognized what they were in. A cargo van.

She looked at the person lying next to her in the semi darkness. She frowned as she recognized Sally Po. She closed her eyes and wondered what was going on. She couldn’t remember what happened. She remembered the explosion and talking to James in the hall way but nothing after that. Her thoughts shifted back to the explosion and Duo. She hoped he was alright, cuz she couldn’t help him right now, anyway. She opened her eyes when she felt more than heard Sally move.

As she watched Sally come to ,she heard the door of the van open. She shifted a bit to see who it was. **James!** She thought with all the anger she could muster.
He looked at the two women and grinned. They were gonna be his ticket out of this mess he was in.
