2. things are not what the seem

Several weeks later:

Wu Fei was roused from his fitful sleep. He reached for the phone. "Chang."

He sat up as he heard Une's soft voice across the line." There has been a shooting. Please come into the office."
"Relena?"
"No, we will discuss it in the office. I don't want to discuss this on the phone. Security reasons."
The line went dead. WuFei frowned as he dressed, wondering who had been shot.

Une was waiting for him when he arrived, handing him a folder and pointing toward the infirmary He looked through it as he walked. As he entered ,he saw Relena curled up in one of the hard plastic chairs , sobbing softly. He eyes flicked to the other occupant of the room, pacing back and forth across the small space.

"Sit down, Maxwell. You'll wear a hole in the floor."
Duo looked up glaring at him and continued to pace.

WuFei crossed the floor and grabbed Duo's arm. "Stop. Tell me what happened."
Duo jerked his arm away, then turned to look at Relena.

"It was.... we think it was an attempt on Relena's life. But it doesn't seem right." He paused, not sure how to continue. "Heero stepped in front of Relena and ...Hilde nudged me out of the way. "He ran his hand through his hair. "Man! She took a bullet for me! "

WuFei frowned." One question, Duo."
Duo looked up, his misery apparent on his face.

"Why were they shooting at you and not just at Relena?"

"I don't know." Duo Frowned," You don't suppose they were really aiming for Heero and me?" He sighed, then looked back at WuFei. "Now I really feel guilty. Damn it!"

"Why would some one shoot at Heero and You? Duo, you have any ideas?"

Duo shook his head, "Unless someone has a grudge against us. Like that wouldn't happen." He replied with disgust in his voice.

Relena sat up and wiped the tears from her face. "Wu Fei, If you think that is true, then all the pilots are in danger! Shouldn't you contact them?"
He looked over at her and smiled. "Taken care of."

Relena looked over to Duo. "Duo, why do you feel guilty?"
He blinked and opened his mouth to shout at her, but Sally took that moment to make her appearance.

Sally brushed past WuFei and went to Relena, grabbing Duo's arm as she past him. "They will be OK. The bullet entered Hilde's shoulder and past right through. She'll be slow moving for awhile. I may recommend inactive duty for her. She will be on it for a while, anyway. "
Duo's eyes got wide, "Is something wrong, Sally? Is she sick, am I gonna lose her?"

Sally laughed and patted Duo's shoulder. "Nothing that serious, dad."
"Da.....Dad? I'm.... she's......I....I...How do you know? How does she know?"

Sally smiled. "She told me, before we gave her anistestic. So we did a local on her shoulder. She’s thinks she’s about 2 months along."

Duo stepped back and started to stutter again. "Me....? I... Oh...wow....."
"Get a grip, Maxwell." Wu Fei , growled as he shook Duo's shoulder.

Duo looked at Sally, "Can I go see her?" His hand slipped into his pocket and he pulled out a small box. "I better ask her an important question."
"Because she's pregnant?"
"Naw, I was going ask her long before any of this." He said, waving his hand, around.
Sally smiled and said, " She should be awake. I warn you , she could be in pain."

"I understand."
She shook her head as Duo stuck the box in his pocket and damn near scampered to Hilde's room.

"Room 234, Duo!" She called after him. She grinned as she saw him wave.

She turned back to Relena. "Heero's going to be OK. The bullets grazed his ribs on the right side, and one went through his leg. He'll be on inactive duty for about 6 weeks. He's in room 235. Yes, Relena , go see him."
Relena thanked her and too disappeared down the hall.
WuFei turned to Sally, "I hear they caught 2 of the perps. Would you like to go with me to interrogate them? I fear they may require medical attention when I am finished."

Sally grinned, "It would be my pleasure." Sally smiled to her self, maybe just maybe, they could start over.

Wu Fei motioned to two guards , as he pulled Sally toward the elevator. The guards followed them into the elevator, standing behind them.

When they reached the floor and the door opened, WuFei stopped them from entering.

"Why are these lights out?" He asked as he pointed to the ceiling.

One of the guards looked up and frowned. "They were all right two hours ago when we brought down the visitors for the prisoners."

"Visitors? The prisoners had visitors? Who authorized that? Why wasn't I notified?"
Both guards looked at WuFei in dismay. "Sir, It was authorized from higher up in the hierarchy. Higher than Miss Relena and Lady Une."

WuFei turned from the guards, looked at the lights and over at the video monitoring camera. "I want a copy of that tape!"

"Yes ,Sir!"
Sally looked down the corridor, "WuFei, we better hurry..............."
He turned back to Sally. "Yes..... Your right."
He drew his gun and proceeded down the hallway to the jail.

WuFei turned to the guards and said, "And No ones been down here sense you brought the visitors down and took them back up?"
"No, sir, Not to my knowledge."

As they came to the heavy metal doors of the jail, WuFei stopped them. The doors were slightly ajar. He stepped up, motioning the guards to follow him. They entered cautiously, watching in all directions. WuFei didn't like the fact that it was semi-dark and there was an odd odor to the air. He was trying to place the smell, when Sally asked, "Why does it smell like almonds in here?"

WuFei stopped in his tracks. He pulled out his microphone. "I need a bio hazard team down here, Pronto. It's Cyanide."

Sally frowned , then looked at WuFei, "We better find the guard and the prisoners."
He nodded and sent the two guards ahead. Sally set her bag on the desk , looking at the items on the desk. She poked them with a pencil.
"Wu, where is the guard? What is going on here? And what did that man mean when he said the order came from higher up? "
Wu Fei shrugged and sighed, "I don't know, Sally, but I intend to find out."
Suddenly there was a shout and a guard came running around the corner.

"Preventer Chang! We found the prisoners. I.......I think they are dead."
"Shit!"
Sally grabbed her bag and followed behind them. What she saw appalled her. One man she was positive he was dead, his skin had a deep blue tinge to it, the other seemed more pink. She went to the pink skinned man first, checking for a pulse. She pulled his wrist up and felt a small patter in the vein. "WU! Call for help! This man is alive!"
She went to the other and looked him over. He was gone. "This one has expired from cyanide poisoning, but I don't think this man was exposed to it. He doesn't have the symptoms. But, maybe he was poisoned with something else. I won't know until I run some blood tests." She looked around. "Where are they!!!?"

As soon as the medical team arrived and the prisoner was removed, WuFei walked through the jail. He noted the guard was no where to be found. He looked up at the video camera and frowned.
how could have this happened? Some one was to be monitoring these cameras at all times, not only monitoring them but recording them. He would get to the bottom of this. He turned on his heel as the clean up crew came in to dust the place for prints and evidence. He told them to take the body to Sally and let her arrange the autopsy. He then made his way to the servalence room. This should all be still recorded unless someone was much quicker than him.

Sally stood in the lab watching the machine print off the toxins in the kid's system. She shook her head and wondered how he could still be alive. She read them off and made a note of which ones she had antidotes for. She grinned. This kid had the constitution of a horse. She gathered all the equipment she needed and went to the room he was in. She started to put bottle after bottle into his IV bag. She sighed as she finished and leaned back , hoping her medical expertise would pay off. Only time would tell.

Sally left the room, taking one last glance at the young boy, lying on the bed.

She walked down the hall way, wondering if she had done enough. She smiled as she thought about the other two patients she had to check on. She pushed open the door to Heero's room. She saw the light on over the bed and the TV playing quietly. She smiled as she saw Relena sprawled in the chair next to the bed. Her eyes were closed and her arms were crossed over her chest. She walked over and pulled the blanket from the extra bed and covered her. She leaned over and checked Heero's IV . She leaned down, to pull the blanket up over him. She jumped as her grabbed her wrist and opened his eyes.

She gasped and placed her free hand over her overly beating heart.

"Gods, Heero! You frightened me!"

He looked at her and didn't say a word. He looked over at Relena and nodded.
"She's been here the whole time."

He released her and smiled slightly. He closed his eyes and relaxed.

Sally shook her head as she left the room.

She crossed to the room a little ways down. She gently pushed open the door. "Are you two being good?"

She heard Duo murmur. "Yeah, we're good. Come on in, Sally."

She could help but smiled as she pushed the door open and saw them.

Duo was in the bed, snuggled up next to Hilde. He had his fingers intertwined with hers. He had his other arm under her head and wrapped around her shoulders. He grinned over at her.

"Hey, Sally." He returned to pressing small kisses to her face.

Sally leaned over and checked Hilde's wound and nodded. "Looks good, Hilde. Are you feeling OK?"

Hilde smiled and nodded.

"Good. I'll come back tomorrow and see how you are, then maybe I'll release you and Heero. " She turned and headed for the door. "See you two later. No hanky panky in my hospital!"

Duo tugged on Hilde's hand.

"Sally! Do you want to see my ring?"
She turned back and said, "Ring?"

Hilde held up her hand , wiggling her finger.

Sally grasped her hand and looked at it.

"It's beautiful ,Hilde. Congratulations. When the big day?"

Both Duo and Hilde shrugged at the same time.

"Let me know when you decide."

They nodded as she left the room.
She thought about the ring and Wufei. She snorted. Not now, not ever. Besides, he had to learn tolerance before she would even consider that.

ps. I don't know if people with cyanide poisoning can servive so I made one die of it but I didn't want to kill my other bad guy off yet. I know it's a plot hole but I'll try to figure out what I should do with it....... More soon!!!!!!
